1952 Swiss cylinder pocket watch — antique restoration

The situation

A collector acquired a Swiss pocket watch from a Thai antique market. The movement was not running; the cylinder escapement was found to have a damaged pallet, the mainspring was broken, and there was mild corrosion on several wheels. The dial was original and intact, which the owner wanted preserved exactly.

What was done

After a full assessment and written proposal, work proceeded in stages. The broken mainspring and damaged pallet were hand-fabricated — no original replacements existed for this reference. Corrosion was treated chemically rather than mechanically to avoid surface loss. The dial was cleaned using archival conservation methods and refitted without damage.

The outcome

The movement returned to operation after eight weeks, running within five seconds per day — reasonable for a cylinder escapement of this age. The original dial, signed by its maker, was fully legible. The owner later noted it was the only piece in their collection where they could confidently say every part was either original or properly period-appropriate.

1970s automatic — service after 30 years in a drawer

The situation

An owner inherited an automatic watch that had not been worn or wound in approximately thirty years. The movement turned over but ran erratically. Old lubricants had dried and gummed several pivot points; the calendar mechanism was not engaging correctly. The case showed heavy surface oxidation on the bracelet clasp.

What was done

Full movement service with particular attention to the dried lubricants. The calendar mechanism required cleaning and minor adjustment to the jumper spring, which had slightly deformed. The bracelet clasp was treated separately and polished. The crystal had fine scratches; a replacement was fitted after the owner confirmed the preference.

The outcome

The watch was returned running within three seconds per day across six measured positions. The calendar engaged cleanly. Total turnaround was three weeks, slightly longer than standard due to the calendar work. The owner noted it was the first time the watch had been worn since childhood — they described collecting it as unexpectedly moving.
